Microarray slides

SCHOTT Nexterion uses two different types of glass for microarray substrates that are produced in the microscope slide format. Both glass types are borosilicate glasses that offer high chemical resistance, low auto-fluorescence, and an excellent flatness. All slides are laser-cut to reduce the risk of surface contamination.


All slides are based on a high-purity borosilicate glass that shows extremely low and uniform auto-fluorescence in the emission wavelengths of Cy3™ and Cy5™ (570 nm and 666 nm). The low fluorescence of the glass provides for exceptionally low background signals during the scanning of a microarray, thereby allowing improved signal-to-background ratios. Consequently, even very low signal intensities, i.e. from weakly expressed genes or low abundance proteins, can be detected reliably.


SCHOTT Nexterion defines “flatness” as the accumulated overall possible thickness deviation. This includes warp, intra-slide thickness deviation, and inter-slide thickness tolerance.

Laser Cutting

Laser cutting avoids the generation of glass particles and yields very smooth edges without chips and micro fractures. All uncoated and coated slides are laser-cut to obtain tight geometric tolerances and to reduce the risk of surface contamination.
